Leash Training Puppy

The first time your puppy wears a leash, it will probably be wondering what he has on his neck and naturally it may want to take it off or bite the leash or even resist walking completely.

The earlier you train your puppy to walk on a leash the better. But the best way to prevent your puppy from being annoyed by a leash or collar is to start out by making your puppy where a collar all day, that way it will get use to wearing a collar. Make sure the collar is lightweight and fits the puppy comfortably.

Once your puppy is used to the collar the next step is the leash. If your puppy gets annoyed by the leash, try starting with a long piece of yarn or shoelace until the puppy is comfortable with a leash.

When walking with your puppy on a leash, even if the puppy gets annoyed, do not take the leash off, have patience. When your puppy behaves correctly give him a treat, a reward. Keep the puppy distracted and not concentrated on the leash. Let your puppy run around a bit with the leash so it gets used to it being there, always supervise while doing this to make sure the leash doesn't get tangles in something.

You may notice at first that your puppy will pull on the leash, but try to keep the leash as loose as possible and avoiding hurting the puppy’s throat. Avoid "pulling" because this only teaches the puppy to respond to pulls, keep the leash in a firm position without pulling. The puppy will notice that pulling does not work and will thus follow you.

Remember leash training a puppy requires patience and time. With some effort you will notice your puppy gradually progressing and getting use to walking on a leash, remember to start early as well, around 4-6 months so the puppy gets used to the leash and collar.
