Puppy Crate Training

Crate training your puppy is very useful if in the future your puppy needs to stay in a crate at the vet or if you want to keep the puppy from roaming around at night, when traveling or when you leave your puppy home alone.

The first and most important thing is to make the crate a comfortable place for your puppy. Place a blanket in the crate for extra comfort and make sure the crate is placed in a well temperature area, you could use the kitchen for example.

The first time your puppy is placed in the crate, like any human or animal, if feels trapped or confined inside the crate. So the natural reaction is to start barking and yelling. Here is where many make a mistake by going to the crate to calm the puppy. By doing this you only show the puppy to keep on yelling until you come

It may take some patience, but do not go to the puppy while it is barking, with time the puppy will get tired and stop barking. Let the puppy know it is safe to be in the crate.

If your puppy is still urinating in the crate, make sure to let the puppy outside or in the potty area for an hour or so before going into the crate.

Don’t overuse the crate. When you are home and can supervise your puppy let them out to roam around or go out for a walk in the park, make the puppy feel cared for and happy.

There is no need to place food or water in the crate; it will only cause the puppy to make a mess. A couple of toys and a blanket are fine. Only leave the puppy in a crate for a maximum of 8-9 hours.
