Puppy House Training

When house training your puppy remember to only punish your puppy when you see it urinating in the wrong place, and of course when it goes in the right place let it know it has done well by rewarding with a praise or treat.

A really good way to start house training your puppy is to use training pads in the area that is ok for the puppy to go. Once the puppy is use to going where the pads are placed slowly start eliminating the use of pads until the puppy know where to go on its own.

Another way, that requires a bit more patience and time, is to always supervise your puppy. Give the puppy access to the area to the potty area and always be on the lookout for accidents in the wrong area. While a bit more time consuming this methods house trains a puppy faster compared to using the training pads.

When your puppy does make a mistake, firmly say “No” and take the puppy to the potty area. Only punish the puppy when you catch it making the mistake. If you find urine already in the wrong place there is no need to punish the puppy because it is too late for the puppy to understand that it is wrong.

Also, remember to use pet urine odor eliminating products that are available online or at pet stores. Normal cleaning products will not eliminate the urine odors, especially on rugs.

To avoid accidents, after feeding your puppy let them outside in the permitted potty area for a couple of hours or take them out for a walk 1-2 time a day. The puppy needs to spend time in the proper potty area in order to avoid it from urinating inside the house.

Remember that having a puppy requires a lot of patience and time, especially during the first year when it is most useful to spend time in house training your puppy.
