Puppy Litter Training

Litter training is best used for small breed puppies. You can train your puppy to use the litter inside the home; this is especially useful if you don’t have a backyard.

Litter training is much like training a cat to use the litter box. Puppies can be trained to urinate in a certain spot or litter box. A dog litter is basically a large size cat litter box filled with dog litter and the training is just like you would train your puppy to use the training pads. Place the puppy litter in a comfortable place for your dog and remember to always keep it clean as well.

Just like potty training your dog to go outside, you have to correct the puppy to use the litter. When the puppy goes in the wrong place, firmly say No! And take it to the litter box. Place the litter box in a quiet place and don’t move it around. Your puppy will slowly learn that the litter box is the right place to go and when it does so reward the puppy with a treat and lots of appraisals.

Puppies usually urinate after eating or just after they wake up from a nap, so when this happens take the puppy to the litter box and keep it there until it urinates. This may take some patience and time, but remember when buying a puppy you must also commit to providing some of your time and responsibility to it.
